The Day After Yesterdays Tomorrow Today Yesterdays Tomorrow Today.....??!

I think everybody would be familiar with this poster by now, if you don't shame on you! It only but the greatest climate based movie....EVER! Well besides Al Gore's inconvenience but that's not a movie. How can you beat tornadoes, tropical cyclones, tsunamis, ice age, wolfs, arctic gear suit, mustache, library and Jake Gyllenhall huh??

Well of course by now you must be going, 'Yeah, it's a good movie and all, that chick is pretty hot too (shame on you), but they're all not true! Hollywood and their tendencies to exaggerate things, why Lady Liberty has a torch, she'll melt in the summer.'

Well.....YOU'RE WRONG! Well okay somewhat true, the science is there but yes Hollywood exaggerated somethings, but the science it's all true, and it has happened. Because climate science is my area of study I decided that maybe I should share some truth in this movie because we all know somewhere along the movie you wonder if this may all be true, but couldn't be bothered googling. So let's we start.

Once upon a time, somewhere in the Arctic there was a polar bear name George (which is ridiculous because no polar bear's have George as a name, it's ridiculous), George was a happy polar bear, and a white polar bear like all polar bear are. One day while looking for food, a huge octopus-like creature rose from the depth of the ice, ate George at brought about the new Ice Age.

No? Not doing for you?? Okay let's really start than.

We will start, like how all things start with a little suspense. Poor George....okay suspense end. I'll start with how the whole chain of events unfold. It all starts with the reversal of the thermohaline circulation. But oh mighty John the Brave, whatever do you mean by thermohaline circulation? Why thank you one person, thermohaline is a simple concept even blondes can understand. Imagine Thermo- (temperature) haline- (salinity) circulation (things that move in a circle?) like a conveyer belt, that transport warm surface ocean water from the equator to the poles, and deep cold ocean water to the equator. That is how global temperature is regulated. Kinda like how your mum scolds me, i do bad stuff, i cry, she comforts me, i get ice cream. Not related but anyway. Thermohaline circulation is govern by the temperature and salinity of ocean waters, warm and fresh ocean waters get transported to the poles (this waters are less dense hence surface water) while cold and salty ocean water get transported to the equator (hence deep ocean water).

Let me give you time to recover, okay. So recap, warm, fresh surface water transported to poles, sinks at poles because salty and dense, transported to equator, will rise again because it becomes warm. Now in the movie, the thermohaline circulation begins to shut down, simply because the cold and salty dense water that is suppose to sinks at the poles undergoes puberty and start rebelling against mother nature, kinda like me. What's that you say? Why? Why does this act of God happened? Well why don't you google it. Okay I'll tell you. Since global temperatures are rising (due to anthropogenic GHG that traps out-going radiation from the surface thus heating the surface), ice caps at the poles begins to melt. So what does this do? Well, because waters from the ice caps are fresh, the cold, salty water now becomes cold and less salty water, so the water does not sink and therefore disaster strikes.

I shall continue later on as all this scientific terms are giving me a rash. But before that a little preview....

-What has been exaggerated in this movie is that the rate at which the thermohaline circulation stops and it's effects do not correlate with one another. Let's just say to feel the effects of a reversed thermohaline circulation would take thousands of years. Simply, if the thermohaline circulation stopped today, the effects will only show in another thousands of years-
